Understanding Medicare

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people 65 and older and certain younger individuals with disabilities. Understanding your options can help you make more informed decisions during enrollment.

Medicare Parts Overview

Part A — Hospital Insurance

Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health services. Most people do not pay a premium for Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working.

Part B — Medical Insurance

Covers outpatient care, doctor visits, preventive services, and some medical equipment. Part B requires a monthly premium.

Part C — Medicare Advantage

An alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurers approved by Medicare. Plans typically include Part A and Part B benefits and often include Part D prescription drug coverage. Plans vary significantly in cost, coverage, and network.

Part D — Prescription Drug Coverage

Adds prescription drug coverage to Original Medicare. Available through stand-alone plans or included in some Medicare Advantage plans. Plans vary by formulary, cost, and pharmacy network.
